Sewing up a Storm

(from Lori)

The week-long sewing courses during
December, February, and April,
incorporated 25-30 different students
each month. Recent projects have
included:  skirts, tote bags, aprons,
tortilla warmers, towels, potholders,
scarves, Christmas decorations, baby
clothes, bibs and gift bags. I was sad to
turn away six students one day, as
capacity was reached with 12 students
in the morning and 11 different students
in the afternoon. Pray that the Lord will
give me wisdom on the “next step” of
this sewing ministry...

Hats, Hats, & More Hats                     (from Lori)
Thanks to all who knitted or crocheted the 1300+ hats that were given out during the
‘08/’09 winter-time in cold Baja Mexico!!
Here are some of the outreaches where your hats blessed so many:
*200 hats were gifted by Iglesia San Pablo during an outreach to families of Tijuana police
officers.
*125 hats blessed women and children at a shelter in San Vicente.
*Over 200 hats were presented by the Iglesia Nazereno de San Vicente in conjunction with their
children’s feeding program to a nearby work camp.
*Hundreds of hats were given out during Mexican Medical mobile medical outreaches in migrant
camps in Santo Tomas and other areas surrounding San Vicente.
*During December, I had fun traveling with another missionary couple, Dave & Lynne Johnson,
who also collect hats (between us we had nearly 2500), as we visited numerous elementary
schools and kindergartens.  We would pull up to schools with boxes of hats and ask if we could
bless the children in celebration of Christmas. Many of the teachers encouraged us to go
classroom to classroom. It was such a joy to help the children dig through the box to find the just
the right style, color, and size to keep their little heads warm. Please keep the needles a clicking
as we will be continuing this ministry and will begin accepting hats again in October for the next
winter season.

The “Hat Ministry” also opened doors for the February outreaches into schools. For the last
several years, the Johnsons have invited me to teach in the yearly “Carnival of Health” in the two
elementary schools in San Vicente. Because of the open doors from “Hats for Mexico”, we were
able to extend the education to three new schools. The team members taught a variety of health
themes. My area was nutrition. I had a great time engaging the students with an interactive time
of putting foods into the correct food groups and a nutrition BINGO game.

Mobile Medical
Outreaches + Reading
Glasses
      (from Lori)

I continue to assist with Clinica
Esperanza medical outreaches in
San Vicente. Word must be getting
out, as over 200 people were
served during the most recent
weekend outreach. There is a lot
of time to share God’s love and
word while people wait to be seen
by doctors, chiropractors, and
dentists.

sewing students with reading
glasses during a mobile
medical outreach

It was rewarding to lend a hand in the vision check
area where we utilize Bible reading in determining if
reading glasses are needed.  Over 60 pairs of
glasses were distributed including several pairs to
my sewing students. Hopefully, it will be easier for
them to thread the needle.

Flu Changes Plans
(from Chris)

Yes, the Influenza A H1N1
outbreak majorly changed
some Mexico outreach plans.
We were scheduled to
outreach for 3 days in May
with a church in Ensenada…
then the Mexican government
intervened… that trip is being
re-scheduled. As of this
writing, this Influenza has
turned out to be ‘just a bad flu
bug’ for most in Baja Mexico...
