6 I come to find out one of the residents we’ve been caring for, JOSE has had some remarkable things happen. Let me tell you…
Jose is in his late 70’s has been blind for about 15 years, and has had serious mental health problems most of his life. Abandoned by his family, he lived for years in the streets of Tijuana, basically eating garbage and sleeping wherever he could find a dry spot. He’s been at Refugio for a couple of years, but continues to be plagued by an inability to sleep. Somewhere in the past, Jose was admitted to a mental hospital and those docs gave him one notch shy of general anesthesia to get him to sleep. He has been demanding the same from us. With our limited access, we’ve treated him with every imaginable medicine, herb and therapy to try and help him sleep. We’ve also consistently prayed with Jose, and he circles back the next week with little gained. Last week, we were seeing Jose, listening to the usual litany of complaints. I felt the Holy Spirit calling Jose to a deeper place of experiencing the amazing and drenching Presence of God every moment. We spent over an hour talking and praying, and the Lord was very present in that time, offering Jose something supernaturally amazing. I was also crying out to the Lord in my own heart, because we had NO more options to give Jose. So here comes Jose today towards the clinic, being led by one of the staff, crying out “Doctor Cris! Doctor Cris! Jesus touched me! I feel Him with me always! I can sleep!” Further questioning found that YES, he’d gotten three straight nights of sleep! Everyone in the clinic literally jumped for joy, praising God and knowing that the healing Presence of Jesus is ‘the real deal’.
Yes, Jose is still ‘dealing with stuff’, but he’s turned a corner. We acquired a small cassette player and a handful of Mexican praise music, which helps Jose doze off with positive thoughts. Yes, friends, miracles happen! 7 I finish with a follow-up of one of the staff kids I’ve been following named Quintin. Two weeks ago he was suffering with a bad ear infection, but the Lord’s healing, prayer and a generous donation of medicines have made for a remarkable recovery. He’s feeling much better, and I get a big hug! It’s late, and we pack up, hugs all around. We get our sloppy good-bye kisses from Vicky, and we’re off to wrangle with Tijuana traffic. Tired but grateful. Twenty minutes later we get ‘in the line’ at the US-Mex border. Looks like it’ll be about 30 minutes today to cross, better than the hour + last week. There are SO many people down here begging for the time of year. Lori passes out energy bars and some of our bottled water for the moms with babes-in-arms, in-between her on-going crocheting hats for the coming fall outreaches. As we leave the stream of beggars at the actual border line, my mind begins to review my final daily task, which is my ‘report’ to Dr Tamez via email. Sometimes it’s a short email about things we saw and giving him the ‘one up’. Today, however, there were some complex patients after he left, and I sent a couple to the Government hospital in his name, so he needs to know what’s up when he gets the phone call…
Another day at Refugio. Hard? You bet. Exhausting? No doubt. Blessed? No question.
Pray for us as we work at El Refugio. Thanks for taking a ride with us!!
